If you’ve ever picked up a wax melt and wondered what’s actually in it, you’re not alone. Most wax melts on the market use synthetic fragrance oils — lab-created scents designed to mimic natural aromas. Essential oil wax melts are different. They use 100% pure essential oils, extracted directly from plants, to scent the wax. No synthetic fragrance. No artificial ingredients. Just real botanicals suspended in wax.
That’s what we make at Wax Pop. Our entire essential oil collection is built around carefully blended pure essential oils, and we think the difference is worth understanding. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know — how essential oil wax melts work, what makes them different from fragrance oil alternatives, what to expect when you use them, and how to find the right scent for you.

What is a wax melt?
A wax melt is a small piece of scented wax — no wick, no jar, no flame touching the wax itself. You place it in a burner, light a tealight candle underneath, and the gentle heat melts the wax and releases fragrance into the room.
Wax melts have become popular for good reason. You control how much wax to use (a whole clamshell section or just a sliver), they don’t produce soot the way candles can, and they tend to last significantly longer. A single full-size clamshell from Wax Pop gives you approximately 88 hours of fragrance time from approximately 100g of wax.
When you’re done, you blow out the tealight. The wax re-solidifies and you can remelt it next time, or pop it out and swap in a different scent. Simple as that.
What makes essential oil wax melts different?
The key difference comes down to the fragrance source.
Fragrance oil wax melts use synthetic oils engineered in laboratories. They can replicate scents that don’t exist in nature — fresh linen, baked cookies, sea breeze — and they tend to be very strong. That strength is part of their appeal, but it comes from chemical compounds rather than plant materials.
Essential oil wax melts use oils extracted directly from plants through steam distillation, cold pressing, or similar methods. Lavender essential oil comes from actual lavender plants. Eucalyptus oil comes from eucalyptus leaves. Lemongrass oil comes from lemongrass stalks. Nothing synthetic is involved in the scenting process.
Here’s what that means in practice:
- The scent is genuine — you’re smelling real plant extracts, not a laboratory approximation
- The scent is naturally layered — essential oils have real top, heart, and base notes that evolve as the wax warms
- The scent can be more subtle — essential oils are naturally lighter than concentrated fragrance oils, but many people prefer this once they’ve experienced it
- There are no artificial fragrance ingredients — just wax, essential oils, and plant-based glitter
We’ve written a detailed comparison of essential oils versus fragrance oils if you want to dig deeper into the differences. Neither is objectively “better” — they’re different experiences, and we make both.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that capture a plant’s natural scent — its “essence.” They’re produced through extraction methods like steam distillation (the most common), cold pressing (used for citrus oils), or solvent extraction (for delicate materials like jasmine).
The concentration involved is remarkable. It takes roughly 250 pounds of lavender flowers to produce a single pound of lavender essential oil. That’s why pure essential oils cost more than synthetic alternatives — and why essential oil wax melts tend to be priced higher than fragrance oil versions.
Common essential oils found in wax melts include:
- Lavender — floral, calming, probably the most recognisable essential oil in the world
- Eucalyptus — fresh, clean, cooling
- Peppermint — bright, sharp, energising
- Lemongrass — citrusy, uplifting, naturally insect-repelling
- Bergamot — citrus with a soft floral edge
- Clary sage — herbal, warm, grounding
- Ylang ylang — rich, floral, slightly sweet
- Cedarwood — warm, woody, anchoring
- Geranium — green, slightly sweet, balancing
The beautiful thing about essential oils in wax melts is that you can blend them. A single oil on its own can be lovely, but combining several creates something layered and complex — which is exactly what we do in our essential oil collection.
How do essential oil wax melts work?
The process is straightforward:
- Place a tealight in the base of your wax burner
- Add wax to the dish on top — a full clamshell section or part of one
- Light the tealight — the heat gently warms the wax from below
- The wax melts and releases essential oil fragrance into the air
- Enjoy the scent developing — lighter notes arrive first, deeper notes follow
- When you’re done, blow out the tealight and let the wax re-solidify
- To swap scents, pop out the solidified wax and replace with something new
The essential oils are evenly distributed through the wax and release gradually as it liquefies. You’ll notice the fragrance developing in stages — the lighter, more volatile top notes (citrus, herbs, mint) arrive first, followed by the heart notes (florals, spices), and finally the deeper base notes (woods, resins) as the wax pool fully stabilises.
This layered development is one of the genuinely special things about essential oil wax melts. It’s not a flat wall of scent — it changes and evolves over time.

Understanding scent notes
If you’ve browsed our scent guide, you’ll have noticed each product lists top, heart, and base notes. This is the same system perfumers use to describe the layers of a fragrance:
- Top notes arrive first — light, fresh, often citrus or herbal. They’re the most volatile, so they fade quickest.
- Heart notes are the main body of the fragrance. They emerge as the top notes settle and represent the core character of the blend. Florals and spices often sit here.
- Base notes are the deep, rich foundation. They’re the last to arrive and the longest to linger. Think woods, resins, and earthy tones.
Essential oil blends naturally have this layered quality because they’re made from real plant materials with different evaporation rates. A bergamot top note will fade faster than a cedarwood base note because that’s how those oils behave in nature.
Understanding this helps you appreciate what’s happening as your wax melt burns — and helps you choose blends that suit the kind of experience you’re after.

What wax do we use?
We use a soy-paraffin blend, and we’re upfront about this because it matters.
Many wax melt brands market themselves as “pure soy” because it sounds natural. We tested pure soy extensively when developing our products. Here’s the honest truth: it didn’t deliver the scent throw we needed, especially with essential oils. Essential oils are already more subtle than synthetic fragrance oils, and pure soy wax made them even fainter. The wax also had an underlying smell we weren’t happy with, and it didn’t last as long.
Our soy-paraffin blend performs significantly better. It melts more evenly, releases scent more consistently, produces a stronger fragrance throw, and gives approximately 88 hours of burn time from a single clamshell. We’d rather give you a product that actually works well than one that looks good on a label but underperforms.
If you want to understand more about our wax blend and why we chose it, we’ll be publishing a dedicated guide on the topic soon.
Are essential oil wax melts safe?
Wax melts are generally considered a safer alternative to candles because the wax itself isn’t burning — it’s being gently warmed by a tealight underneath. There’s no soot produced and less fire risk than a free-standing candle.
That said, you should always follow basic safety practices:
- Use a proper tealight burner placed on a heat-resistant surface
- Never leave a burning tealight unattended
- Keep away from children and pets
- Use standard 4-hour tealights only — longer-burning tealights can overheat the burner
Important: We don’t make therapeutic or medical claims about our products. While essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy, our wax melts are home fragrance products, not health products. If you have specific health concerns or sensitivities, please consult a medical professional.

How long do essential oil wax melts last?
Our full-size clamshells provide approximately 88 hours of burn time from approximately 100g of wax. Several factors affect this:
- Room size — larger, open-plan spaces disperse fragrance more widely
- Burner type — some burners run hotter than others, which can affect how quickly the scent is released
- Tealight quality — we recommend standard 4-hour tealights for consistent, safe performance
- Amount of wax used — you don’t have to melt a whole clamshell section at once; experiment to find your preference
One thing worth knowing: essential oils produce a naturally softer scent throw than synthetic fragrance oils. If you’re used to very strong fragrance oil melts, essential oil versions will feel different — more nuanced, less overwhelming. Many people find they actually prefer this once they’ve experienced it, particularly in bedrooms and smaller spaces.
Eco-friendly choices
Sustainability is something we care about, and we try to make responsible choices where we can. Our essential oil wax melts come with:
- Recyclable PP clamshells — check your local recycling guidelines for polypropylene
- Compostable plant-based wrappers
- Biodegradable plant-based glitter — no microplastics
We’re not perfect, and we’ll always be honest about that. Our sustainability journey is ongoing and we’re constantly looking for ways to do better. But we’d rather be transparent about where we are than pretend we’ve got it all figured out.

Tips for getting the most from your melts
A few practical things that make a genuine difference:
- Store in the original wrapper in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — essential oils can degrade with heat and light exposure
- Use the right tealight — standard 4-hour tealights give consistent, safe heat
- Don’t overfill the burner dish — a single clamshell section is usually plenty for a room
- Give the scent time — essential oil blends develop in layers, so let the top notes settle before deciding if you like it
- Clean your burner between scents — let the old wax solidify, pop it out, and wipe the dish clean before adding a new scent
